History of the brewery Grain d'Orge

Grain d'Orge relates the history of its brewery which started at the end of 19th century. The history of the brewery is made of key dates.

 Key dates

1895 : the town of RONCHIN sheltered 5 breweries on its ground for 3 500 inhabitants. One of them was held by Henri VANDAMME.

1898 : Henri VANDAMME decides to make Pierre HOLEVAQUE a partner in order to found a more industrial brewery and therefore they choose a site in the “rue de la justice”, the present “rue Anatole France” in RONCHIN.

1899 : The brewery is built from the very start of this year and a first mash is carried out there in June.

1902 : Pierre HOLEVAQUE decides to withdraw and Mr VANDAMME begins immediately to search for a new partner, which will be Desiré DESRUELLE, a farmer of the Marsh of LOMME who sells his grounds to the city of Lille which is in full expansion.

1906 : Mr VANDAMME decides on his turn to leave the brewery. This one is only exploited by Desiré DESRUELLE, it becomes "Brewery DESRUELLE-THEETTEN", THEETTEN being the maiden name of Mr DESRUELLE’s wife.

1906-1914 : It is in the pubs built at the rhythm of one year until 1914 that 80% of the production is sold and 20% is sold to private individuals (extremely rare fact at that time), even more easily since beer is also available in bottles bearing the effigy of Jeanne d’Arc on their label since 1912.

1919 : In 1919, the manufacture that has stopped during the war starts again with a beer which is now filtered and more and more sold in bottles. The society grows progressively.

1927 : Désiré marries his daughter with Charles LECLERCQ, son of a brewer’ family established in Hempempont since 1653 and perfectly knowing the tricks of the trade. He makes his son-in-law join the company which takes at that time the name of "Brewery Jeanne d'Arc".

1927-1960 : The production is constantly increasing: in quantity because it passes from 17 000 hectolitres in 1927 to 33 000 hectolitres right before the second war but also in quality such as attested by the success of "Triumph" prize-winning in Brussels, Ghent, Paris and Prague. After the second war, the brewery spreads territorially since its surface increases just like its market (it takes over the markets of the competitors that withdraw without reopening after the conflict). The production continues to grow in order to reach 180 000 hectolitres in the 1960’s but regresses thereafter with the evolution of the tastes of the consumers in particular.

1960-1990 : The family brewery LECLERCQ adapts while focusing itself even more on the qualitative side. Beer in litre in consigned bottles is carried out at home.

1990 : In the beginning of the 1990’s, the system replaces the one of the mass marketing with lost glass. In the 1990’s there is also the launching of the specialty beer within a range of already various products.

2001-2002 : Created in 1898 and taken over in May 2001 by Patrick d'AUBREBY, the Brewery “Jeanne d'Arc” is renamed in June 2002 “Brewery Grain d'Orge”. The new management wanted to clearly mark her will of being fully in harmony with the expectations of the new consumers: consumers in search of naturality, authenticity, conviviality but also innovation.
